The Setting and Maintaining Safe Boundaries e-Learning highlights the importance of setting and maintaining appropriate therapeutic and professional boundaries at all times in mental health, particularly sigh secure environments.
The module defines boundaries and emphasises the need to ensure that professionalism is maintained in working alliances between staff and patients at all times; ensured by adopting a range of safeguards and support systems.
Examples and case studies are used to illustrate the difference between a healthy working staff/patient alliance and inappropriate or unsuitable ‘relationships’ which might involve friendship or intimacy.
The need to maintain and support safe boundaries, recognise lapses and rest boundaries is explained. Risks associated with boundary lapses and/or pushes are also covered.
