Medicines Management in Secure Environments e-Learning

An e-learning module promoting the awareness of risks associated with medicines management in prisons and secure environments. Topics covered include: safe prescribing, 'in possession' medication and the limitation of medication choice.

Prisons and secure environments present complex patient populations. However, treating ill health and standard of care in prisons should be equivalent (but not the same) to that delivered in the community. Treatment for disorders such as pain, depression, epilepsy, psychoses, sleep problems and substance misuse present particular challenges.

Those working in the secure environment must be aware of the risks associated with prescribing certain groups of medicines. Care must also be taken with storage, administration and monitoring of medicines.
